Remarks by Mr. Elvin Ashrafzade, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations at the high-level event titled “Exploring New Pathways for Dialogue Among Civilizations and Jointly Writing New Chapters for Global Governance”

Excellency,
At the outset, I would like to thank the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China for convening this important meeting.
As a country that has long promoted intercultural and interfaith dialogue, Azerbaijan was pleased to co-sponsor the United Nations General Assembly resolution 78/286, which declared 10th of June as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.
Azerbaijan firmly believes that promoting understanding and dialogue among cultures and civilizations strengthens the universal values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Regrettably, discrimination, intolerance and violence are on the rise globally, requiring accelerated efforts by the international community underscoring the need for stronger international cooperation. Building freedom, justice and peace also depends on tolerance, empathy, mutual understanding and inclusiveness. In this regard, we commend the important work of UNESCO and UNAOC in fostering dialogue and building bridges among cultures and civilizations.
Our society is inherently multicultural and multi-confessional, with a history of peaceful coexistence that has endured throughout the centuries. We remain committed to promoting tolerance and mutual understanding both nationally and internationally.
Among Azerbaijan’s key initiatives is the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, launched within the framework of the Baku Process in 2008. The Forum has become an important global platform for advancing intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity. Its 7th edition will take place this October under the theme “Dialogue for a Shared Future: Building Bridges in a Fractured World.”
In conclusion, Azerbaijan reaffirms its strong commitment to promoting dialogue among cultures and civilizations and advancing the values of a culture of peace.
