Mr. President,
The signing of the Charter of the United Nations 80 years ago was an unprecedented achievement of collective will to save future generations from the scourge of war, uphold human dignity, and build a peaceful and just world through cooperation and the rule of law. Since joining the United Nations in 1992, Azerbaijan has consistently contributed to international cooperation, advanced multilateralism, supported the United Nation’s development and humanitarian activities, led global initiatives in support of developing countries and staunchly promoted dialogue among cultures and civilizations. Our experience also vividly illustrates the consequences of inaction when the Charter’s core principles are violated and misinterpreted. The aggression against Azerbaijan and the resulting occupation of its territories in the early 1990s claimed tens of thousands of lives and destroyed thousands more, while the key demands of the relevant Security Council resolutions remained unimplemented for nearly three decades. The end of the conflict and the restoration of my country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity created conditions conducive to building a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Mr. President, in the face of many serios challenges posed by, inter alia, conflicts, climate change, ethno-nationalism, disinformation and misinformation, it is imperative to safeguard the Charter and strengthen multilateralism. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of States must be respected. The Security Council must be reformed to be more representative and effective. Support for countries engaged in post-conflict recovery must remain a priority for the international community. Such support and solidarity are critical to my country and many States around the world that are overcoming the severe consequences of devastating conflicts. Azerbaijan reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter and to building a just, peaceful and sustainable future for all. Let this 80th anniversary be not only a moment of reflection, but a renewed affirmation of our shared responsibility to protect and promote peace and international law.
Thank you. |
