Statement by H.E. Mr. Tofig F. Musayev Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations at the high-level event marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia
ECOSOC Chamber, UNHQ, 16 March 2026
First of all, I would like to thank the Office of the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia for organizing this high-level event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of the OIC, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 76/254 of 15 March 2022.
Rooted in the dignity and equality inherent in all human beings, the effective realization of the freedom of religion or belief is of paramount importance for achieving inclusive, sustainable and prosperous societies.
Regrettably, Islamophobia, acts of harassment, intimidation, violence and incitement directed at Muslims and Islam have risen sharply, reaching alarming levels. These dangerous trends manifest themselves in various forms, including in digital spaces and through the media, requiring stronger commitment and strengthened international cooperation.
By designating 15 March as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Member States underscored the need to promote dialogue, raise awareness, encourage a shared global commitment to peace and mutual respect and to keep this issue high on the agenda of the United Nations.
Since the adoption of General Assembly resolution 76/254, as part of its consistent international efforts to contribute to combating Islamophobia, Azerbaijan has organized three international conferences on the issue. Taking this opportunity, I would like to inform the distinguished audience that the fourth international conference will be held later this year in Baku under the theme “Islamophobia: A Global Challenge on the Agenda of Human Rights”.
In conclusion, we reaffirm our firm commitment to continue promoting respect, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among cultures and religions and contributing to collective action in this regard.
Thank you. |
